Why are people a businesses' most important resource?

Developed economies are now going through the knowledge revolution. People's knowledge, education and experience are critical factors in the success of businesses. Technology is changing so rapidly that it is crucial for many businesses that their staff have the most up-to-date knowledge, in order to solve the cutting-edge problems that will keep the business ahead of the competition.

The manufacturing industry is now largely capital intensive. Today's big employers are in the service sector and their largest expense each month is usually the payroll.

Employees at every level need to be kept motivated and focused on the objectives of the company. If they are not motivated then the business is losing out on:

    • the imagination and creativity of the employee
    • the time the employee spends avoiding tasks

The company also risks the dissatisfaction of the employee spreading among co-workers.

The work you cover in this section will look at three issues in organisations:

    1. The factors that motivate workers
    2. Group behaviour
    3. Leadership styles
