The Ancient Indus Valley

Subject: History
Key stage: Key stage 2
Scheme of Work unit: How can we find out about the Indus Valley civilisation?

1 The Ancient Indus Valley
Publisher: Harappa.com
Summary: Mohenjodaro, Lothal and Harappa; all of these sites flourished in the Indus valley between 3000 and 2000 BC, if not earlier. The introduction to this background site for teachers explains the main features of this civilization and puts it into a geographical as well as historical context. There are comprehensive slide collections of the sites presented as ‘walkthroughs’. Pictures of harbours, great baths, storehouses, bead factories, mysterious mounds are accompanied by often-scholarly descriptions. Of particular interest are the slides of terracotta artefacts and figurines, some of the latter are a little ‘questionable’ and care will be needed in deciding which to show the children. 3D images of the mounds are available (Quick Time) and there are ‘atmospheric’ sound files. The site also tells a little of the Indus valley today; there is an interesting description of modern fisherfolk for example. The site is easy to navigate and the photographs are of high resolution, which makes a fast internet connection desirable. Other areas of the site contain links to further information on the web. The icon pointing to UK schools leads to some interesting descriptions of further resources.
